Between Valdis threatening his life and then pretending she didn't, and Crichton putting a gun in his hand and telling him to shoot, Arthur has got to start begging everyone who feels bad for him to Simply Stop. They are Not Fucking Helping.
Valdis is like the world's most infuriating puzzle, and Arthur keeps wanting to flip the table and throw the pieces, but he hasn't quite given up on trying to work out how they fit together. The reply takes a few minutes, because he is doggedly resisting some unhelpful zinger like 'if that's how you act when you feel bad for me--' ]
Last time we talked you expected me to be satisfied that they would not be used again because no-one else would look for them
What changed question mark

[ And he decided that meant she was being flippant and not serious about protecting them. Even if he doesn't trust that she cares about other people, he should at least have trusted her apparent selfishness. He didn't trust either, which was honestly insulting.]
And what changed is that I never wanted to be a hero, but I don't want to be a villain either.
[And that's as close to an apology as she is capable of.]

Ugh, fine. So what if every single cause for concern she cited was about how everything had affected her? He still has to admit that she sure did cite a lot of causes for concern. Fine, all right, he can trust that she cares about keeping them locked away. And he can trust that they're... relatively not-unsafe with the Captain, if only because he could probably kill Valdis just as easily without them. There are, he has to admit, worse containment methods.
As for her other statement, he's really not sure how to take it. It's the typical Valdis flavour of grandiose, which makes him want to take it as posturing. But, fuck it. For Max's sake, if not for hers (and it's definitely not for hers), he'll take it in good faith.
He paces and mutters in annoyance for a bit before actually answering. ]
Since you felt my death I am sure you understand my desire to see the daggers safely contained. However I trust you to know what you are doing with them
[ What else? He could apologise for his part of their argument before, but then he'd have to pretend to have done something wrong. He could thank her for telling him where the daggers ended up, but she delivered the information like an asshole.
His pause is long enough that his STT thinks the sentence is finished, so fuck it, it's finished. ]

He's like a fucking raincloud every time she sees him, a sick spot in her soul, a bruise that someone keeps pushing. People have a right to their feelings, negative and positive, it just sucks she has to feel them. Especially when they are directed at her.
The message will be left on read, there's no reason to risk aggravating the bastard further.]
